What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord). It occurs when the immune system attacks myelin, the protective layer around nerve fibers, thus causing temporary lesions and inflammation. It can also cause permanent lesions from scar tissue, making it harder for your brain to send signals to the rest of the body.

Factors That Could Increase Your Risk of Developing Multiple Sclerosis

  • Age - Though you can develop MS at any age, most people diagnosed with the condition are between 20 and 50 years
  • Sex - MS is 2-3 times more common in women than men
  • Family History - 15% of people with MS have one or more family members or relatives with the disorder
  • Climate - MS is more common in areas with temperate climates (such as Northern U.S.)
  • Viral Infections - Several viruses are linked to MS, including Epstein-Barr (that causes infectious mononucleosis)
  • Vitamin D - Low vitamin D levels can increase your risk of MS
  • Autoimmune Diseases - Autoimmune disorders, including pernicious anemia, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 1 diabetes, are linked to MS
  • Smoking - Compared to non-smokers, smokers experiencing symptoms relating to MS have an increased probability of developing relapsing-remitting MS

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

The common MS symptoms are:

  • Fatigue It makes it harder for MS patients to perform everyday tasks.
  • Difficulty Walking It is associated with numbness in the legs or feet, muscle weakness, difficulty balancing, and muscle spasticity, thus causing slips and falls.
  • Vision Problems These include optic neuritis (causes blurry vision or pain in one eye), blin
  • Speech Issues These include slurred speech, changes in speech volume, and scanning speech (long pauses between words or syllables), leading to communication difficulties.

Other Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Acute or chronic pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sleep issues
  • Tremors

All these symptoms may recur, becoming worse over time. However, the symptoms may vary from patient to patient depending on the type of nerves affected and the severity of the damage. Though MS is incurable, it is possible to manage the symptoms.

Managing the symptoms does not mean taking prescribed medications alone. While medications prevent the progression or relapse of the condition, MS patients will likely also need an in-home care provider. This is because an in-home caregiver can assist MS patients in performing their daily tasks, preventing slips and falls and reminding them to take medications on time.
